About Malcolm Kahn
Inviting you to see familiar places in extraordinary ways.
My photography is centered on the geometry of a city skyline, the quiet strength of a lone lighthouse, the expanse of a western landscape, and those few minutes when light turns a familiar scene into something else. What interests me most is finding a perspective that causes someone to pause, to recognize a place, yet experience it in a way they haven't before.
Based in Northern New Jersey, I have photographed throughout the United States and around the world. Decades of international travel for business put me in front of landscapes, cities, coastlines, and cultures I would never have gone looking for. From New York and the American West to Iceland, Europe, and Asia, the same things keep drawing me: structure, dramatic light, intricate detail, and a strong sense of place.
Many of my large panoramic works are constructed from dozens, and occasionally 50-60, individual high-resolution photographs, meticulously integrated into a single composition. The resulting images hold a level of detail meant to reward both viewing from across a room and exploration from a few feet away.
I am deliberately selective about the photographs I exhibit. This website is not intended to be an archive of everywhere I have traveled or everything I have photographed. Each image has been chosen because I believe it can stand independently as a finished work of art.
The Craft
For me, creating the photograph is only the beginning.
I control the process myself, from capture and digital development through printing and final presentation. Prints for framed works are produced in my own studio on professional wide-format equipment using archival pigment inks and fine-art papers chosen for each image.
Many of my photographs are ideally presented as acrylic face mounts, a demanding process in which the print is bonded directly to the back of optically clear acrylic with no air gap, giving the photograph incredible depth and pop not possible with traditional framing. These are produced at a professional lab, under my direction and final inspection.
My objective is simple: to create photographs that make you stop, look longer, and continue discovering something new each time you return to them.
